Bryan and I went out for dinner tonight. As we were waiting for our food, we were surprised by how many couples were sitting directly beside each other as they ate. This was so bizarre and awkward-looking to both of us, but maybe we are the weird ones. Do you guys normally sit beside your significant other at a restaurant?
The only possible benefits of this arrangement that I can think of are:
-both of you can people watch
-if you secretly can’t stand each other, I guess it’s nice not to look at each other’s faces while you eat
-easier covert groping
-possibly a feeling of intimacy as you bump elbows and gaze lovingly at the side view of your partner’s nose
Maybe this doesn’t bother anyone else. Enlighten me.

mollie,i think its so weird when couples sit next to each other. i would much rather have joels eyes on me while we talk so we sit across from each other. plus then your not bumping arms while your eating. but i do appreciate the groping comment!

Apparently some people like it better for conversation. Could be a cultural thing, too. In Paris restos and cafés have lines of tables facing the street and ppl sit side by side, eat, drink, chat and people watch.

I don’t think it’s weird. I think it is a public display of affection while eating edition, where they can hold hands or have and arm around each other.

The only time I’ve sat next to a boyfriend instead of across was so we could people watch &/or talk about people without one person having to constantly be looking over their shoulder. but other than that… I’ve always liked my space.

my girlfriend and i like to sit next to each other in crowded restaurants since it’s easier to hear each other from across the table, plus we can sit closely together while we wait for food. easier people watching is also a plus haha!

I have served tables for years and it’s always awkward to have same side seaters. It is NOT the way to sit and eat and it drives me nuts.

I actually like sitting side by side. It’s always been like that, I can’t remember a time that we sat across from each other, just feels more comfortable. And we do like to people watch.

I’ve heard *most* couples sit side by side in restaurants after they’ve been dating for longer than a few months/years. I seem to remember doing that with a boyfriend…to me, it’s less formal and more comfortable.

hahaha! i agree. it’s totally awkward. jim and i recently had a conversation on how we both agreed that is totally awkward…unless you are on a double date with someone. my ex always wanted to sit side by side. i ALWAYS felt awkward. horrible.

NO, I think that is so unusual! Every time I see couples do that I feel weird. It’s more normal for couples to sit across from each other; more comfortable.

It’s so they can both sit in the booth, because chairs aren’t good enough.

That is strange, I would never want to sit beside a significant other on a date… You are not alone.
